What About Maddy?

I've spent a lifetime working in one form or another with young people – usually some of the most deprived and alienated in society. I've worked with them face-to-face, created training and educational courses and trained others to work with young people.

Much of what I’ve done has been created, recorded and catalogued in the written form.  There have been limitless opportunities to express myself in written English, and several delightful opportunities to challenge the status quo with the cut and thrust of a heated debate!

My lifelong relationship with the English language has taken me to many interesting places where I’ve met some fascinating people, and in the process it’s enabled me to provide a very fulfilling service helping people who, quite often, had no one else to turn to.

My business is a natural evolution of my love of the English language and the sense of satisfaction I get from helping others

With Whom Do I Work?

My clients fall into two distinct groups.

The first group would include people who have English as their first language. They may have the ability to write good text but want it reviewed, revised, proof read or improved.  Or they may be people who don't have the skills or patience to write good text and want help to create an image that reflects their skills, characteristics or business direction.

The second group would include people who use English as their second or third language, and while they may speak English, they’re not so familiar with the written word.

All of my clients currently undertake a large proportion of their business on the internet. The vast majority of people using the web speak/read English. It’s estimated that there are 300 million native speakers and 300 million who use English as a second language, with a further 100 million using it as a foreign language.

English is the language of science, aviation, computing, diplomacy, and tourism. It’s listed as the official or co-official language of over 45 countries and is spoken extensively in other countries where it has no official status. The English language is the most widely taught foreign language in the world.

If my clients’ web sites are only in their native, non-English language, their ability to attract the incredible numbers of potential customers and clients searching the internet for what they want and need, will be substantially diminished.

What About My Experience?

Most of my working life has meant being involved in writing – the majority of it in formal situations such as writing letters, reports, training courses and funding proposals.

I’ve also needed to do a lot of speaking in public, both as a trainer and a deliverer of speeches, and my understanding of the English language has stood me in good stead.

I’ve always found English to be fairly easy, and I think when you find you’re ‘naturally’ good at something, you enjoy it. I’ve also been an avid reader since a very early age. I always had my nose in a book - often under the bed-clothes with a torch when I should have been asleep - and I think that develops your language abilities, expands your vocabulary and broadens your ideas about how to express yourself.

I get pleasure from seeing English written correctly, fluently, and effectively. I recognize that for many different reasons, not everyone is able to do that. For example:

► Maybe English isn’t their first language (and as an English person living in France, I know how difficult speaking a foreign language is – let alone writing it!)

► Even for native English speakers, writing it isn’t everyone’s forté.

► Some people just don’t have time for writing…

My pleasure and satisfaction is in seeing a well-written page, in whatever form - email, web page, article, eBook etc.

Why Is Creating A Professional Image Important For You?

One of the ways you can create the very best image for yourself and your business is by ensuring that you present yourself as a professional person in everything you do.

That includes the quality of your goods and services, the way you treat your customers/clients and the presentation of your website, advertising materials, emails and everything else you use to attract and interact with potential and existing customers/clients.

Most people who see a poorly written, poorly laid out web page, leave it immediately! Poor presentation reflects poor professionalism and there is, in my view, no excuse for this. Your business should be SEEN to be professional in all its aspects if you want to be successful.

If you don’t take the time and trouble to present yourself well, it raises questions about whether you will take the time and trouble with your clients/customers.
